Freedon Writers merupakan sebuah film yang dirujuk dari buku “The Freedom Writers Diary“, yang mana buku tersebut berasal dari kisah nyata yang menceritakan perjuangan seorang guru yang berusaha membangkitkan semangat belajar dari para siswa didiknya. Kisah bermula dari kedatangan seorang guru wanita bernama Erin Gruwell yang memiliki sifat idealis serta tingkat kecerdasan tinggi ke Woodrow Wilson High School, diwilayah Long Beach, California, Amerika Serikat, yang mana pada saat itu isu rasisme di Amerika begitu hangat dibicarakan masyarakat. Kedatangan Erin didasari pada niat tulusnya yang menggebu-gebu unuk mengajar pada muridnya yang menurut Erin membutuhkan perhatian khusus dalam penanganannya. Niat mulia Erin ini tidak serta merta di setujui oleh Ayahnya, karena Steve (Ayah Erin) berpendapat bahwa Erin memiliki tingkat intelegensi yang tinggi, dan jika kemampuannya tersebut hanya digunakan sebagai seorang pengajar, maka kecerdasannya akan sia-sia, namun Erin tetap pada pendiriannya untuk menjadi seorang guru dan niat baiknya itu didukung oleh suaminya yaitu Scott
